After the FBI discover that a cell phone in the homeless man's possession was used to send the text message that Mark Benford was drinking in his flashforward to Olivia Benford, Shelly Vreede takes her to see the homeless man's corpse to see if she can identify him. She is unable to do so. ("The Garden of Forking Paths")

However, the medical examiner and Olivia suspect from the homeless man's enlarged hippocampus that he is an autistic savant. Based on that clue, Vreede and Benford go to a medical institution where they meet Gabriel, who suggests that he and the homeless man were both participants of the Raven River experiments.
